Build VolunteerPress with us
VolunteerPress is built by a community of contributors who meet in person. If you want to work on a real WordPress plugin, shipping code, docs, and tests that nonprofits actually use, this is a good place to start.
Onboarding happens in person
Everyone joins VolunteerPress through an in-person onboarding session. Sessions are held in Columbus, Ohio. After onboarding, contribution is hybrid: work on issues remotely between meetups and join us in person when you can.
If the next session doesn’t work for you, email contribute@volunteerpress.org and we’ll let you know when another is scheduled.
Upcoming
📅 Saturday, September 5 · 1–4 PM
Contributor onboarding
Codebase walkthrough, local environment setup, and pairing on first issues. 💻 Bring a laptop with Local installed if you can. We’ll handle the rest there.

What we need help with
- Code: PHP (WordPress plugin architecture, REST controllers) and JavaScript (Gutenberg blocks, the WordPress Interactivity API)
- Documentation: guides, troubleshooting, and tutorials written for non-technical site owners
- Testing: trying VolunteerPress on real themes and hosts, and filing clear bug reports
- Translation: VolunteerPress ships translation-ready; we need translators
How contributions work
The repository is private; contributors get collaborator access after attending an in-person onboarding session. All contributions are reviewed before merge. VolunteerPress is licensed GPL-2.0-or-later; everything you contribute stays free software.
